Orange have been putting the "rock" into "rock'n'roll" for 40 years now, and to celebrate they've released an Anniversary Series to pay tribute to the amps that started it all back in 1968. The OR50H is one of just two amplifiers in the series, and at just under £1,000 it is the more affordable of the two - but don't mistake it for a 'budget' model!

In 1972 Orange launched a definitive amp which was later dubbed the 'Pics Only' because there was no text on the front panel. When they came to think about what they wanted from the OR50H, Orange looked at this vintage legend as a reference - cosmetics, tone and even some construction techniques were inspired by the 70's classic, including the omission of any labels on the plexi-glass front.

The OR50H isn't a re-issue, though - it's a monster of an amp in its own right! There is a traditional single-channel circuit featuring three stages of gain, but this amplifier has a secret weapon up its sleeve - the HF Drive control. As you turn it up, power amp gain and presence are increased, enabling you to create incredible vintage tones with a unique edge that can't be found on any other amp!

Getting a great sound is an absolute doddle, as there are only six knobs on the entire thing - Gain, 3 bands of tone (Bass, Middle and Treble), HF Drive and Master Volume (which can be defeated by footswitch).

The only way to get true tone is by using real valves, and in this case there are 3x ECC83/12AX7 preamp tubes feeding into a pair of EL34s to ultimately produce 50W of vintage power - and as anybody who has played a valve amp knows, somehow a valve watt is remarkably louder than a solid-state watt!

Finally, on the back there are 2x 8 ohm speaker outputs, as well as one 16ohm output too, which ensures this amp should be compatible with pretty much any guitar cab. Although, you'll probably want to check out the matching PPC412-LTD 4x12 cab for the ultimate tone...

This is one hell of an amp, and to make it even more appealing, Orange will only be producing them this year - making this a Limited Edition and instantly collectible. If you want to try it out, then head down to our Portsmouth store where we have them available to demo... but whatever you do, don't waste any time in securing your piece of British Amplification History!
